Finding and adapting a home for a client who suffered a spinal cord injury in a road traffic accident.

Our client, SM was involved in a road traffic accident in June 2020, resulting in a spinal cord injury. When we first met SM, he was undergoing intensive rehabilitation as a residential client at STEPS Rehabilitation. SM was living in an adapted rental property and was looking to purchase a property which could be adapted to meet his needs and specific requirements.

A property needed to be found that could be fully accessible in a wheelchair, accommodate future requirements and care needs and pool therapy. Our client also had a specific set of suitable locations, wanted long distance views and a property that wasn’t overlooked.

Brief

F+A were instructed to assist SM with the challenge of finding properties in the South Yorkshire area, covering a wide district down the M1 corridor.

What we did

Our team are experienced in identifying development potential in properties and we have built up a reputation for helping claimants and their advisors find a suitable home quickly.

We are aiming to make the best use of the existing facilities and recent refurbishment by the previous owners, as well as treatment of the complex levels in the garden.

At present our team are coordinating survey information and finalised feasibility plans (numerous options have been explored). Our client is also receiving visits coordinated by France + Associates, from specialist lift, hoist, and pool companies, to enable us to put together a detailed design package.

Once a design is agreed, we will prepare 3D proposalswith a view to submitting a planning application for the site.

You can read more about our search for this property here.

Accessibility + other features

The site will include a new glass “garden room” along with wheelchair access down to the garden level with the use of meandering paths to accommodate the complex levels and enhance the journey down to garden level.

SM and his family enjoy the garden and its imperative to make best use of the beautiful long-distance views and generously proportioned garden space.

In addition, the property will benefit from an annexe garden building which will house a home gym, changing rooms and hydrotherapy for SM, to continue his rehabilitation and maintain present mobility strengths.

The main dwelling will have “light touch” adaptations carried out to what is already a beautiful home, to accommodate SM’s needs and his family. The large tandem garage will be converted into part double garage, utility, carer’s accommodation, and storage. A lift will provide SM access to both ground and first floor levels. SM’s main accommodation will be on the first floor.
