Adapted, wheelchair accessible home for a young client living with a severe brain injury.

AW was in her early 20's when she was catastrophically injured in a road traffic accident. Severely brain injured and wheelchair bound, our brief was to help with the purchase and adaptation of a new property to enable her to move out of the care home that she had been living in for several years.

We worked alongside the family, her legal team and expert witnesses to create a design that met her living requirements. The project included a unique challenge as the property had a protected species of newt which necessitated us engaging the services of an ecologist.

Brief

Our brief was to review the property being purchased and to agree a design with the family and expert witness in the case. It was unusual in that the house needed to be divided into 3 distinct sections:

  1. an area for the client
  2. carers accommodation - 24 hours care is supplied by a team of 2 carers
  3. and the family - she lives with her Grandparents
