JJ suffered a head injury and medical complications following a road traffic accident. Wheelchair dependent and with limited communication, he became entirely dependent on care to meet his living needs. This project involved extending and adapting a beautiful period property in London.
JJ lives in the house with his mother and brother who act as his main carers. The downstairs living space was unsuitable for JJ’s needs, and too cramped to accommodate visits from the family and friends who live close by.
We therefore extended the downstairs of the property in a way that was sympathetic to the period features of the house. This included paying significant attention to details such as the ceiling moulds and installing a period kitchen.
We improved JJ’s access throughout the property by widening circulation areas and placing careful thought on how the spaces would be utilised by JJ and his family. It was important so that the family could spend time together, which includes socialising whilst preparing food.
