Brief

Our brief was to adapt and future-proof a family home to support the evolving needs of a young adult with cerebral palsy. The single-storey side extension included:

  • Home Office with separate entrance from the main house.
  • Hydrotherapy Pool and Therapy Room.
  • Visual Monitoring from the main house into the pool area.
  • Level Access.
  • Specialised Changing Facilities and flush ceiling hoists.
  • Home Automation.

Accessibility Features

  • Hydrotherapy Pool: Integral to our client’s physical therapy routine, the therapy pool’s ‘Fastlane Counter Current’ feature provides resistance for swimming, similar to swimming upstream in a river, and offers buoyancy.
  • Therapy Room: Designed for more regular therapeutic sessions at home, reducing the need for travel.
  • Specialist Changing Facilities: Equipped with discreet hoists to ensure ease of use and comfort.
  • Fully Accessible Home Office: Enables our client to work independently from home, supporting his professional life and improve his long term career prospects.

Key Features

  • Home Automation and Discreet Solutions: Home automation, including speaker systems, automatic doors, blinds, HD CCTV, lighting controls, and media systems, enables our client to operate independently. Despite extensive adaptations, the home maintains its aesthetic appeal. It avoids a clinical atmosphere by incorporating features such as flush ceiling hoists to ensure the home feels inclusive, welcoming, accessible, and comfortable for the entire family.
  • Therapeutic and Professional Support: The hydrotherapy pool and therapy room support our client’s physical well-being and contribute to his emotional and psychological health by reducing the need for external therapy visits. The fully accessible home office supports our client’s professional life, allowing him to entertain clients and enjoy continued business success.
  • Future Proofing and Sustainable Design: The design incorporates adaptable spaces, high-spec installations, and sustainable materials to ensure long-term functionality and resilience. Durable materials and innovative design solutions blend the extension seamlessly with the existing structure.

The New Coach House demonstrates how thoughtful design, innovative solutions, and robust construction techniques can create a sustainable, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing home.
