Multi award winning property, remodelled, refurbished and extended for the benefit of a child living with catastrophic and life changing injuries.

Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards [2017] 'Best inclusive design' (shortlisted) & 'Best extension' (runner-up)

This multi-award-winning project involved the extensive remodelling, refurbishment and extension of an existing detached dwelling for the benefit of a child who suffered catastrophic and life changing injuries as a result of medical negligence.

Our role was to act on behalf of the trust, to provide a design that incorporated the various care, therapy and accommodation required as set out in the expert in the legal case.

The property underwent a considerable remodelling of location of walls and rooms, resulting in 60% of the the existing internal walls being removed and an increase of 25% to the size of the building.

Brief

This property was purchased on behalf of a Trust for the client. We worked collaboratively with our clients care team, occupational therapist, accommodation experts and clinical negligence solicitors, Irwin Mitchell.

An important factor to the client and her family was that the property accommodated all her needs, whilst at the same time avoided the clinical finish that can be typical of 'disabled adaptations'. As architectural designers, we feel that it is important that our designs are inclusive of all the needs and requirements of members of the household.

 Testimonials

“Planning ahead during the build has helped us to pre-empt some of my daughter’s possible future skills. The building will therefore continue to facilitate her development”

“The continual collaboration between client, architect and builder ensured that the end result of an evolving project was a home the family could be proud of that fulfilled the needs of each and every one of them.” Paul Mundy, Building Contractor, Hillam Homes

"The use of assisted technology on this project aims to improve ease of manoeuvrability for wheelchair access between rooms." Simon McFarland, Environmental Control Specialist

"The property adaptations undertaken have ensured that the client can be as independent as possible. It's well thought out layout allows her to be as independent as she can be with her mobility and daily living skills. Her continued rehabilitation can be enjoyed in her own home, with her family." Caroline Penny-Smith, Independent Occupational Therapist.
