RM suffers from cerebral palsy and is in her mid-20's. She has lived with her family since birth, but as a young person with an active social life, she was keen to lead a more independent life and move into her own accommodation.
We were initially instructed to undertake temporary adaptations to her parent's home before embarking on a larger project to help her purchase and adapt her own property.
RM and her family wanted to take their time and think carefully to choose the perfect home that would enable her to embark on living an independent life.
The pace of this project was therefore very much set by the client and her family, giving us plenty of time to get to know RM and understand what she needs from a property. Our client lives life to the full and enjoys an active social life. She attends college, enjoys spending time with her friends, and attends gigs and other social events.
Experience has shown us that it is not unusual to take up to 2 years to find the right home, purchase and adapt it, however with RM we were able to find the right property in our first round of searching. The property had recently been renovated, everything inside it was brand new, which meant that adaptations required were minimal compared to many others on the market.
What we did
France + Associates were retained to carry out the adaptations, which was completed on the 5th October 2020.
The works included carer’s accommodation, specialist bedroom and bathroom and internal alterations to make the property wheelchair friendly. The vast amount of work was external due to level change. With the property being south facing, the rear garden was ideal for a large patio area which leads to the access ramp down into the garden.
We completed a feasibility report for the property, showing how it could be adapted and refurbished internally and externally to suit client’s requirements of independent living.

“France+Associates adapted an existing property for our daughter Bex, who has dreamed of having her own home since she was 14. Due to the enormity of the project, we have felt so lucky to have the entire process managed by Jonathan - from talking through ideas and plans to the final build, he has been a huge support every step of the way.
Jonathan and the team at France+Associates held our hand throughout, and we were even allocated Amy as a dedicated point of contact who got to know our family really well. During this time, we have built an incredible working relationship with her which has been invaluable, particularly her knowledge and understanding of the specialist equipment that was needed in the home.
As a 26-year old woman, Bex has her own style and it was important to her that her home was accessible, but in a non-clinical way, and that is exactly what France+Associates have achieved. The house is a tasteful home that anyone would be proud to live in.
Bex was a major part of the whole process. Everyone appreciated Bex’s input and were sensitive to her needs. Because of the lockdown, Bex was not attending college so was around more than expected, which meant she was able to be fully involved.
Bex’s 24/7 care team were also a big part of the process, and we all felt that their contribution was invaluable. They are an incredible team, and the house will be their home and workplace, so its nice to know that they are provided for too!”
